Etsy to Shopify Migration SEO Checklist (2026)
Moving from Etsy to your own Shopify store is one of the highest-traffic-loss events a small business can do — most of the rankings stay with Etsy. Here is how to preserve what you can.
Etsy-to-Shopify migration is one of the most common transitions in small ecommerce, and one of the most misunderstood. Sellers expect it to be a "lift and shift" — copy the listings, set up Shopify, install a redirect app, done. The reality: Etsy keeps the rankings. Your old Etsy listing URLs continue to rank for branded and product queries even after you stop fulfilling on Etsy. Your new Shopify product pages start from scratch. The SEO question isn't "how do we move the rankings" — it's "how do we minimize the loss and rebuild faster."
This is a checklist for sellers who have committed to leaving Etsy or running a parallel Shopify store, written from the perspective of someone who has watched dozens of these transitions happen.
Why Etsy SEO Doesn't Transfer
An Etsy listing is hosted on etsy.com/listing/[id]/[slug]. The domain authority that helps your listing rank belongs to Etsy, not to you. When you create a Shopify product, the URL becomes yourstore.com/products/[slug] on a brand-new domain with zero authority. Google's first-pass evaluation of your Shopify product page treats it like any other new page on the internet.
The branded queries that customers searched on Etsy ("[shop name] earrings") still land them on Etsy — even if you've closed the shop, your shop URL often redirects to an Etsy search page rather than your new site. Etsy controls that redirect, not you. You cannot tell Google "this Etsy listing is now this Shopify product." There is no 301 you can write on Etsy's domain.
This is the core problem. Every migration plan has to account for it.
Pre-Migration Audit (Do This First)
1. Pull Your Etsy Listing Export
From Etsy: Settings → Options → Download Data → Currently for Sale CSV. This gives you titles, descriptions, prices, tags, SKUs. It does NOT give you listing URLs, view counts, sales by listing, or which listings rank for what queries. Compile a spreadsheet with one row per active listing. You will need this for the parallel-running phase below.
2. Identify Your Top 10 Etsy Search Queries
Etsy provides Shop Manager → Marketing → Search Analytics for shops on certain tiers. If you can access it, export the past 90 days of search terms with impressions and clicks. If you can't, manually search for your brand name + product keywords on Google and see which Etsy listings rank. Those are the queries you will most directly compete with yourself on after migration.
3. Capture Etsy External Backlinks
Use Ahrefs (free trial), Semrush, or a Google search for "yourshopname" site:etsy.com and link:etsy.com/shop/yourshopname. Any blog, magazine, social post, or wedding-directory site that links to your Etsy listings is sending Etsy authority that you cannot reclaim. Make a list. The migration plan should include outreach to ask these sites to swap the link to your Shopify URL (small percentage will, but every one matters).
4. Decide on Etsy Closure vs. Parallel Operation
This is the biggest strategic decision. The three options:
- Hard close Etsy. Lowest cost, fastest transition, but you lose the rankings entirely. Search results for your brand-name queries will continue to surface the closed Etsy shop (which now shows "this shop is no longer available") for 6–12 months before Etsy de-indexes it. During that time, customers searching your brand name will get a dead end.
- Vacation mode + redirect listing descriptions. Set every Etsy listing to "vacation mode" and edit each description to start with a sentence pointing to your Shopify equivalent ("This item is now available at yourstore.com/products/foo"). Etsy doesn't allow direct external links in listings (their TOS prohibits driving traffic off-platform), so this is a gray area. Some sellers do it and Etsy doesn't enforce; others get warnings.
- Parallel operation indefinitely. Keep Etsy active with a curated subset of listings (or all listings), and treat Shopify as the growth channel. The Etsy rankings keep delivering Etsy sales (with Etsy's fees and lower margins); Shopify becomes the relationship channel for repeat customers, email lists, and brand-direct traffic. This is what most successful migrations actually look like.
Shopify Setup Choices That Affect SEO
5. URL Structure
Shopify gives you no choice on the URL pattern — product URLs are always /products/[handle] and collection URLs are /collections/[handle]. You can edit the handle. Do not use Shopify's auto-generated handle from a product title with stop words — clean it up. "personalized-handmade-leather-keychain-with-name" is better as "leather-keychain-personalized."
6. Theme Performance
Choose a theme that scores 70+ on Lighthouse Performance out of the box. Dawn (Shopify's default reference theme) scores in the 80s. Many paid themes score in the 40s due to bloated JavaScript and unoptimized images. Theme performance directly affects your Core Web Vitals, which affect rankings.
7. Robots.txt
Shopify generates robots.txt automatically. As of 2026, you can edit it via robots.txt.liquid in your theme. Verify that /checkout, /cart, /account, and any sort/filter URLs are blocked from indexing. Verify that /products/, /collections/, and /pages/ are crawlable.
8. Canonical Tags
Shopify auto-generates canonical tags on product pages, but it gets two things wrong by default: collection-product pages (/collections/foo/products/bar) canonicalize to themselves instead of to /products/bar, and tagged variant URLs may not canonicalize correctly. Manually audit and fix these in the theme — there are widely available Liquid snippets for this.
Content Migration
9. Rewrite, Do Not Copy
Do not paste Etsy descriptions into Shopify product pages verbatim. Google will see two versions of the same content on two different domains. Google's duplicate content handling will pick one to surface — and on a brand-new Shopify domain vs. Etsy's authority, that's going to be Etsy. Rewrite every description with 30%+ of the words changed. Add Shopify-only sections: shipping, returns, brand story, FAQ.
10. Product Schema
Shopify's default theme generates Product JSON-LD schema correctly. Verify it includes: name, image (at least one URL), description, sku, brand, offers.price, offers.priceCurrency, offers.availability, and offers.itemCondition. Etsy's schema does not transfer; you are building this fresh.
11. Image Migration
Etsy images are hosted on Etsy's CDN at URLs you do not control. When you save Etsy product photos to upload to Shopify, the file metadata gets stripped. Use this opportunity to: rename files descriptively (leather-keychain-personalized-tan.jpg not IMG_4892.jpg), write distinct alt text for each image, and upload at the largest available resolution so Shopify can serve responsive variants.
Customer Communication Plan
12. Email Existing Etsy Customers
Etsy provides customer email addresses for past purchases. Pull the export. Send a transition email announcing the new Shopify store, ideally with a discount code. This is the single most valuable migration asset — your existing customer list. Etsy's algorithm will not surface your new Shopify store to your past Etsy customers.
13. Update Social Profiles
Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, X — every social profile that has your Etsy URL needs to be updated to your Shopify URL. Pinterest is especially important for ecommerce; Pinterest's own algorithm treats domain consistency as a quality signal, and pins linking to your old Etsy shop will continue to drive traffic to a closed (or parallel) shop.
14. Update Your Email Signature, Business Cards, Packaging
Sellers forget the offline touchpoints. Order new business cards, update packaging inserts, edit any printed materials that point to Etsy. New Shopify customers from existing buyers come from these touchpoints more than from search.
Setting Realistic Expectations
15. Traffic Will Drop 60–90% in Month 1
This is the part nobody wants to hear. Your Shopify store starts with zero domain authority, zero organic rankings, and zero search visibility. Even with perfect technical SEO, you are 6–12 months from Etsy-equivalent organic traffic. The first 90 days, your sales will be: email list, social, paid ads, and word-of-mouth. Organic search will be a rounding error.
16. Brand Searches Recover First
Within 30 days of consistent activity (new content, customer reviews, backlinks), your store will rank #1 for your exact brand name. This is the easiest SEO win and the most important — every email, packaging insert, and social post is training customers to search your brand name.
17. Product Queries Take 6–12 Months
Generic product queries ("personalized leather keychain") are the hardest. You're competing with Etsy listings, Amazon, established Shopify stores, and high-authority retailers. Plan to compete on long-tail variants ("personalized leather keychain with engraved name") first and work toward broader terms.
Post-Migration Monitoring
Once you launch the Shopify store, monitor these monthly:
- Google Search Console: verify every product page is indexed, watch impressions grow on brand and product queries
- Site health: broken links, missing schema, slow pages — small ecommerce stores often regress on these as they add apps and themes
- Backlink growth: manual outreach to anyone linking to your Etsy listings to swap the link
- Etsy parity: if you're still running Etsy, monitor which listings still get clicks there vs. on Shopify
The Underlying Truth
Etsy migration is a marketing-and-brand-building exercise more than an SEO migration. The technical SEO checklist matters (broken links, schema, performance), but the strategic question is: how do you transition your customers and your brand presence to a new home while accepting that the search rankings will not come with you? Sellers who accept this and invest in email, social, paid acquisition, and brand consistency successfully rebuild within a year. Sellers who treat it as a copy-paste job give up by month three because traffic never recovered.
Run a StoreVitals scan on your new Shopify store. We'll check whether your product schema is valid, whether broken links exist from imported descriptions, whether your robots.txt blocks the right paths, whether your Core Web Vitals are competitive, and whether your canonical tags resolve correctly — the technical foundations that determine how fast Google trusts your new domain.
