Age verification is legally mandated for alcohol, cannabis (where legal), vape products, tobacco, firearms, kratom, kava, and certain adult content. Beyond legal requirements, payment processors (Stripe, Shopify Payments) and ad networks (Meta, Google) often require it as a condition of acceptance for these categories.
Self-attested gates ("Are you over 21?") are the bare minimum — easy to bypass but acceptable for many SKUs. ID verification (Veratad, Yoti, Jumio) checks government ID against databases — required for alcohol shipping in many states and for high-risk vape/cannabis SKUs. Use ID checks at checkout only, not on every page.
Google generally tolerates age-gate interstitials when they're legally required (alcohol, cannabis, etc). For non-required gates, an interstitial blocking content can trigger Google's intrusive interstitial penalty on mobile. Always remember the user's choice in a cookie so they don't see the gate every visit.
